Have to agree with Bruce and add that by a great margin, problems are more likely generated by owners and those folks they have working on their cars, than by the designers and manufacturers. When Volvo found an alternate source in Bendix, for engine management electronics, the different approaches were governed by patents and licensing agreements, so human nature had some field techs distrusting the new guy, the unknown, and others just ignoring the important feature differences, i.e. the titania sensor, field programmable ECU, lack of an AMM, and modular coil/driver assembly. The minority technology always has a harder time being assimilated by the service guys, but those who did learn it well back then are most likely not working for VCNA now, but have their own independent shops.

Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
