key won't go into ignition 200 1991

Hi everybody,

Car in question: 1991 240, auto, 200k (just happened!)

My wife has had some problems pushing the key into the ignition when attempting to start. There seems to be a plate blocking the key (I haven't seen it happen yet).

Any ideas what it could be? I wondered about the neutral safety switch, when instructed over the phone the wiggle the shifter and put it into N (after moving the plastic lever), that did not seem to help.
Could it be the ignition assembly itself?

What seems to fix it for now is pushing the plate away with a small screwdriver.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Boerre
