Dying while driving 200 1993

wouldn't you know it...proud Dad sends son off to big city (Dallas) with what Dad thinks is perfectly ready 93 245. Son commutes 45 miles each way to work on highway for 2 days...no problema!
Then the "Green Hornet" starts to die out at highway speeds, idiot lights come on. I had the alternator rebuilt last year with a new voltage regulator installed. Battery is 3 years old, however. Should son take out battery after work and have it checked at FranticBoys? Could it also be a defective Voltage Regulator?
Man, long distance repairs by phone are a mother dog!!!
Thanks for any suggestions, Bricksters.
BTW, Mom is suggesting getting rid of the 245 and buying a ...(shudder)...Honda.
