Extremely poor fuel economy 200 1988

Howdy all,

I have owned this 1988 245 wagon for around 8 or 9 months now and have had very poor fuel consumption ever since I bought it; but, I haven't had the time or cash to fix the problem until now.

Just a short history. When I bought the car I did some of the common 'tune up' fixes including replacing the belts, spark plugs, fuel pump and motor mounts. I mainly used the car for short trips around town never traveling more than 20 ks. But every week, while only adding up 40-50 ks, I have to top up my tank with 10-15 liters (my gas gauge is very sticky and I fear running flat out of petrol). I previously had a compression problem in one of the cylinders fixed improved stability and I think to a certain degree the fuel consumption. With a bigger drive (around 100 ks) coming up as well as a desire to fix this problem instead of neglecting it as I have, I am hoping to solve this issue.

I have not looked at or replaced any parts in the fuel lines (pump, filter, pressure regulator) or the o2 sensor which if I follow other posts on this board seem to help my problem. But my real question is whether or not I am missing a big fix that has been causing these adverse symptoms or is it a sum of the small things I have neglected?

I am falling hard for this brick and I am willing to do a fair amount to see it run as it is supposed to. Any help/advice on this front would be very much appreciated.

thanks in advance
