Gas tank cleaning 200 1981

I will drop the gas tank on my 81 245 this weekend and would like advice on cleaning it myself. Decided to do this after finding the fuel filter partially clogged. I've only had the car a month, and have no history and don't know how long it sat in California before I got it. Maybe a year or so. There's a good company in Louisville but the cost is $250 for cleaning and coating and at least a week down time. It's my only driver and while I can drive my daughter's 79 242, it has 300000 on it and in need of a timing belt.
