It's been a while since I've posted here, since the 740 has been serving me true for the last 10k miles with no problems. Today, I had a scare and I'm a little puzzled. I hope you folks can help me.
I felt a slight steering pull (which I thought was the normal road crown, until I hit the brakes and felt a tug sideways), and at the I smelled burning plastic for about 10 miles while I was driving a friend around on his errands. After we parked and he went inside, I checked out the engine and couldn't find the problem. Then I felt a waft of heat from my passenger side... the hub was oven hot. And smoking a tiny bit.
So I said, "ARG!" and decided I needed a new caliper and bearings and rotors. Not a fun job either.
I was over 50 miles from home, so I decided to make a tentative attempt at driving myself home. I backed out of the space and drove a bit, testing the brakes. No pull. Wtf? After 5 miles I stopped and felt the hubs. Dead even. Another 45 miles on the highway with no uneven or abnormal heat.
So... uh... I'm a little confused. My theory: a piece of gravel got stuck between the hub and rotor on that right front side. This happened to me before, actually, on the rear right. When I changed the pads on the rear right I found a few rocks that had wedged in there. I think this happened to the front brakes today.
I think when I backed out of the parking space, I dislodged the rocks. After that, it was all good. Whadda ya think?
