Should I Have Rusted Areas Cut Out & Then Paint My 89 240 DL?
Or does it have too much rust damage?
Hi all,
I am continuing to restore my 89 240 DL. Next step is to have a reputable body shop attend to rusted areas (bottom of front fenders, rocker panels, & bottom of rear quarter panels). For areas where the rust is bad, the shop will cut out the rusted areas and install new replacement patch parts.
The car will then be repainted in the original color – any suggestions for type of primer & paint? Epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, or ?
Am I nuts? Should I not even think about pursuing this project? I enjoy driving the car – it has been extremely reliable – if the exterior of the car looked nearly new I would be more than happy to continue driving the car as my daily driver.
Also, I work at an office with a couple hundred of engineers – all with their new BMW’s, AUDI’s, LEXUS’s, etc. I get a big kick out of driving into the parking lot in a 21 year old Volvo – I’d love it even more if the exterior was pristine.
Also, I am planning in NOT reinstalling the following:
- plastic cladding that is on lower portion of doors
- plastic cladding that was installed on rocker panels below the doors (already removed in pics)
- lower valance below rear bumper
Has anyone PERMANENTLY removed the above parts? Of course, the holes in the body (where the above attach) will be carefully filled in by welding prior to painting.
I will be removing all of the trim pieces myself to save $$$. I plan on removing the following for painting:
- removal of horizontal body-side trim moldings from front fenders, doors, & rear quarter panel
- removal of door handles
- removal of chrome trim around each wheel arch
- removal of headlights & taillights
- removal of plastic/chrome trim pieces around front & rear bumpers
- removal of front grill
- removal of side VOLVO badges (will be replaced with side turn signal lights)
- removal of VOLVO 240 DL badge from trunk lid
- removal of 3M black tape which is located on doors just under bottom edge of windows (not sure if I will reinstall)
Nothing has been done to exterior since I purchased it 4+ years ago except the purchase and re-powder coating of the Virgo wheels.
