Another 960 A/C Issue S90-V90 1997

Re : Vent. Pull the yellow vacuum hose off the dual acting vacuum servo that controls the dash vents/floor vents on the driver's side of the HVAC plenum. That should keep the dash vents operating when you accelerate if the problem is a vacuum leak with the vacuum servo but you will not have any air flowing out of the floor vents. So, in the winter reconnect so you have floor heat or repair the dual acting vacuum servo.

Re : A/C compressor cutting out. The pressostat should keep the low side pressure between 25-45 psi when the A/C is turned on (compressor cycling). The compressor has a high pressure pop off valve and a high temp circuit interrupter. If yours has been bypassed you may want to check that it was done correctly.

Check the static pressure in your system when the engine is cold and has not been run in at least 8 hrs or more. At 75F ambient, the static pressure in the r134a system should be around 78.3 psi if the system is filled correctly. This is only a snapshot and not a great diagnostic but it is some data.

If your system is low on r134a, then the only accurate way to refill is to recapture the existing r134a, then add the correct amount of r134a and PAG oil by weight.

I have in the past used the following method for years and it has worked well on many a vehicle with r134a A/C systems and has not caused any problems.

Engine on, A/C on, fan on high, thermometer in center dash vents. Measure lowest temp coming out of the center vent. If it is in the low 40's or lower I would not add any additional r134a. If it is 47F or higher, then I would add r134a until the temp at the center dash vent stops going down. You do not want to overfill a r134a system. It is better to be low on r134a then to have too much.

Hope this helps.
