tightening alternator belts

i've got some squealing belts at low rpms in first gear on my '91 244. i opened the hood and the two belts that are connected to the alternator seem to be pretty loose--maybe 3/4-1" of give on both of them. i tried to tighten them by pivoting the alternator, but i couldn't get enough leverage to keep them taut while i tightened the bolt. should i be tightening these belts by pivoting the alternator?
