Magic trick for getting tank pump/sender in correctly? 940T wagon 900

I'm installing a new in-tank fuel pump in my son's 1993 940T wagon today. Got sender unit/pump out with no problem. Replaced pump and filter sock no problem. Read tip to run a string down to the pump and up through the vent hose to compress the pump assembly to get it into place.

I've been fighting this f$%%^$#@#%#er for the last 3 hours and it will NOT rotate into place properly. Tried it with gasket in place, gasket out, pump assembly compressed, pump assembly extended, rotate from clockwise, rotate from counterclockwise, NOTHING works.

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Any suggestions other than setting the car on fire would be appreciated. (I already thought of that one.)
