Replacing Engine Idler, belt tensioner and timing belt 900 1997

Hello:
My 97 Volvo 960 began making a growling noise when idling. I believe the idler rotor and/or tensioner pulley have gone kaput. Can someone who knows or who has had this problem let me know approximately how much this should cost, parts and labor, to get repaired? The place I took the car to is not a Volvo dealership but a shop that specializes in Volvos. Also, are these replacements, tensioner, idler and timing belt, something I can do on my own? (I previously replaced the vehicle's alternator w/o too much trouble, and so I have basic skills and tools). Last question: If I do decide to do the repairs on my ownn, is the car okay to drive back home where I left it 60 miles away?
Thanks for answers!
Bogy
