A/C Compressor Cycling On and Off 200 1993

I have read quite a few posts about this problem and I am getting a little better idea of what the A/C system problems might be on my 240. A couple things I am curious about though...

The compressor tends to run just fine when the temperature is below 90 degrees. So far this summer, that has been a VERY rare event.

Compressor runs for about 1 second then shuts off for about 5 seconds. When compressor runs, PSi is +/-25. When it cuts of, PSI climbs to 50. Does this indicates that I have the system over-pressurized or is that proper pressure?

If I find that the Pressostat is bad do I need to evacuate the system? If I have someone evacuate (vacuum) the system, will the car be OK to drive while I take it back home to install the part. Then take the car back to have someone fill it, or can I just get a couple of can and fill the system?

Thanks in advance for any help/tips/pointers. A/C is not my strong suit.
