Get another opinion on this issue. Got to another shop that can at least identify what "rear" it is, and then what they suspect is wrong. Changing the entire assembly for a single worn axle bearing, or loose parking brake shoes, or a bad u-joint, is stupid. Very rarely do the differentials "go bad" on these cars - they are incredibly strong and overbuilt for the power of the engines.
