How does one remove and re-install the seat adjuster handle?

I've rebuilt a couple of seats sans problems except removal of the seat adjustment crank handle.

This is held on with a spring steel cup that holds onto the square rod tip. If one drives the rod w/ a punch and hammer, the handle is released but often the cup and the smaller grab washers are ruined.

I expect that they're made to be used once but new clips are not something I have available.
