Restoring 142S 140-160 1970

No. I didn't have a gapper so I just put the new plugs in. Does that really make that much of a difference? I guess every little bit helps, right? I don't know how to do a static timing set. How do you do it? I'll give it a shot! I'll also pick up a feeler gauge for the plugs and for the valves.
I've already drained all of the old gas and brought it to a toxic waste dump. I can actually see where gas had spilled out of the carbs when I last tried to start it. So, even after I clean the carbs I'll probably be back at the ignition afterwards.
I just wish I could get it running so that I could determine if the engine internals are sound. The 142S is a little rare in California; although there are quite a few 144's and 145's in Berkeley!
It's going to take a good amount of money to get her presentable again. She's fully stock at the moment and all of the parts are there so it's tempting to restore her to original.
But now that I've learned there are folks out there that are puttting four mikuni's in place of the strombergs - well that sounds like a lot more HP!
Having said that, taking apart a B20B would be a good exercise since the motor is pretty simple to figure out and well designed. I also like the idea that if I take it to a track out in the desert and it breaks, I might be able to fix it on the spot.
Dream on, right!!!
