Dead Speedometer Question 700 1992

Daughter called today. Speedometer is dead, all the other instruments are working. I plan on checking the wires and usindg Davide D.'s ,method of diagnosis when I get home. I do not know if the odometer is working yet, as I am still at work. Just a few questions though:

1. If the speedometer dies, will it automatically throw a code?

2. If the wires going back to the rear sensor are broken/corroded/bad, then is it true the odometer will not work either? (helps with the diagnosis).

3. Where is the ground for the speedometer located?

Any other thoughts/diagnosis hints are appreciated. I have printed off the Speedometer Failures section from the faq's as well.
Thanks
