Trouble Removing 240 A/C and PS Belts 200 1992

I'm having trouble removing the AC and PS belts on my '92 240. I think I know the basic theory--loosen the pivot bolt(s) and the hold-down bolt on the adjuster, and then loosen the adjusting screw. But having done that, neither the PS pump or the compressor will move enough to let the belt come off.

It looks to me like both the compressor and pump sit in a cast subframe on the left side of the engine, and it's easy to see the pivot bolt(s). But when I loosen everything I need to loosen (I think) the compressor will only move a little, and instead of the whole thing swinging in, only the front will move in. Not enough to get the belt off, and I'm afraid to force it any farther. With the PS pump, it only moves down a little until it hits the subframe or something. Not enough to get the belt off.

I've done alternators without any problems, so this has me puzzled. Any help appreciated.
