Is this a really bad problem? 200 1980

Couple days ago changed the oil in my '80 242DL as usual, about every 2,000 miles. I drop it hot at night then add the 4 qts. plus filter the next morning. This time, much to my dismay, I noticed metal shavings in the collector pan. Never did that before. Has used slightly more oil lately, little over 1 qt. per 1K miles. But this is the first time metal came out, too.

Questions: (l.) why didn't the filter catch the metal (new Mann filter every 2K miles, (2.) any way to tell where metal came from, rings, bearings, pistons, pins, and (3.) am I eventually doomed to major engine repair/replacemet? Took a compression test yesterday. Results: 120, 127, 125, 130, not much change from a year ago.

BTW, I have not lost any power or in anyway has performance changed, just slightly more oil usage, no leaks at all. Just turned 84K miles. Really appreciate your opinions. Thanks.
