gasket/seal question (help!) 85 245 200 1985

I'm putting my Overdrive back on (replaced the O-rings, as ODGuru suggested..and he was right, they were toast).

I put the gasket back on (from Jim Fisher Volvo, so it's a original). It fits a little tough and accidentally gets torn around one of the studs. So I put some sealant around each stud, instead of all the way around. Then I put it on, and hand tighten as they suggest.

It's supposed take a day to dry before you tighten it the rest of the way. But, during the night I started to wonder if putting it only around the studs was incredibly stupid, because it would lead to more leaks being possible, due to the uneven distribution of the sealant.

Should I have spread it around the whole gasket instead of just around the studs?

Taking it off shouldn't be a bit deal, so if I have to buy a new gasket I'll live if that's the case.

thanks
