brake pedal looses firmness, brakes stop working and warning light comes on 200 1990

First post for my new project, 1990 245 White rust free.

When I press the brakes the pedal will work momentarily and then after a second the brake failure light comes on and the pedal looses pressure and sinks towards the floor quickly. I've read through the FAQ and have some thought of it being the Master Cylinder failure. But this being a 1990 with a braking system that could include ABS I'd like some advice (haven't looked too closely and still haven't picked up the car, not till monday).

I'm tempted to just swap out the MC before driving it home but I also have the option of getting a pretty cheap flat bed tow from the place I'm buying it from. But I'd rather just get a temporary tag and drive it.

PS> the short story of finding the new project.

I was at the Pull-a-part the other day looking for a intake hose to pass emissions with. The car I'd went to see had been crushed. So on the way back to the office I went down the first isle near the gate for cars unprocessed and out of customer's reach. There was a guy there from Texas pulling some suspension parts from a small pick up. We exchanged hello's and I inquired to the part he was removing. I like to see how other cars fare to the 240's. He asked me what kind of cars I work on and at that he told me there was a white wagon for sale down the road 4 blocks and around a corner. He had bought a car there before or something. When I went to the place I found a white wagon with a straight body and no rust and it ran.

The windows had markings for sale with the asking price of $700. One look at the engine made for a sad welcome. The PVC system had not been cleaned and oil had been "coming out the top cap" according to a young man working there. The block has oil all around it and the belts are all out of alignment and squeal on first acceleration. The transmission jerks into each gear as well and the brakes don't work. Tailgate doesn't open and the harnesses look broken. But there are no codes coming up and a compression test with throttle open was 150 psi all the way across. Still I find it a gamble at the moment but one I'm willing to take. $450 with an original cat and exhaust that is leak free. I'll be parting out my 86 244 and with that being sent to the yard I should be into it $250 and possibly less if I recycle the cat in the next couple years.

Kind of funny how these things find us sometimes. It was scheduled to be crushed today so I found it at its last opportune moment. When I called today to confirm I wanted it the guy told me that the guys who crush the cars where looking at that very moment. Hopefully its a long term good investment.
