'crackels' in trim 200 1989

The black stripe trim that goes the length of the wagon at "upperlevel", under the windows, not the "bottom" trim, has developed "crackels" in it over the years; can it be stripped off and replaced? Something put over it? I can "make it black" with that "Back to Black" stuff from IPD, but the "crackels" dont go away. Im sure it's from being in the sun for many years. Painting it probably wont cover it, I think. Suggestions?? Thank you.
