Mechanical Speedometer Questions (difference between M46/BW55/AW70 apps.) 200

In the -'86 240's, what exactly is different in the drivtrain/speedometer gearing equation between the various transmissions and rear-end ratios that Volvo used?

From what I've seen, there are two different speedometers. One for the wagons with the 185R14-diameter tires(speedo number r0,960)and another one for use with the 185-70-14 tires(r0,980).

What is the difference between, for example, an M-46 car with a 3.73 axle ratio and one that has a 3.54 ratio? Is the difference the gear in the transmission, the gear on the end of the cable, or is there some difference inside the speedo that I'm not aware of?

I'm curious as I've got an M-46 car with what I believe is a 3.54:1 ratio rear end and I want to put in an AW-71, but I also want the speedometer to be correct.
