Draining the transmission (m46) 200 1985

I drained the transmission, via the overdrive solenoid, took off the overdrive and put it back on just now.

I was in the process of filling the transmission, when I noticed that after barely 1 1/2 quarts of ATF type F, the fluid was spilling out of the transmission.

I thought that the capacity was 2.4 q's...so that got me wondering.

I had the car on level ground, so it couldn't be uneven. Could there be air-bubbles in the transmission?

Or, did the transmission not drain completely because I did not use the drain-plug? Is the overdrive solenoid above the drain plug?

thanks!
