Tailshaft /output shaft play 700 1986

I'm replacing my 745T's tailshaft bushing and seal, and after I got the tailshaft housing off, I got the urge to wiggle the shaft itself to see how much play there was. The amount of wiggle seems extraordinary; how much play should there be (side-to-side, up-and-down, round-and-round) without the bushing/seal/housing in place? Also, what should I use to polish/smooth any imperfections in the flange so that it doesn't ruin the new seal? Thanks for your input!
