I got hit. First time dealing with insurance companies...ever 200 1988

Lived in the U.S for two years now and trying to figure out how the insurance business works here. Somebody hit me at a parking lot. Headlight, hood , grille, radiator support and the body in between the bumper an headlight got pushed in. I got his info and called insurance co who came out two days later and looked at it. They estimated the repairs to $1700 but didn't give me a cash value for the car since it was to old and it would take them a few days to figure it out.
So I wonder if they value the car to less then $1700 and they called it a total loss what happens then? ( I live in Minnesota). She mentioned something about they were required by law to take it which I hope I missunderstod, is that right?

Any help very appreciated!
John
