Thanks Spook. I took the seat apart right down to the frame, and tried to fit the motor on the opposite side. The difficulty though was the lower cable, which would have to fit the seat motor right beneath. Inverting the motor would be a fix, but I would have to shorten the upper cable. In the end I cleaned the frame up, moved the motor back to the original side, greased the gears, and soaked the cables in ATF, and reassembled.

Thanks to rstarkie for the idea to use plastic zip ties. That saved me a lot of time and trouble, and worked perfectly. The seat works perfectly, and looks much better as well. Thanks to all brickboarders that contributed here.
