'U' joints not volvo specific

Common 'U'joint failure is needel bearings drying out, deteriorating and eventually the Caps knock around and cause banging and Vibration in the Drive train.
Has anyone ever had a 'U' joint that looks fine, feels tight but squeaks? Just a squeak every revolution and then diappears at higher speeds?

I am chasing down what sounds like a rubber squeak on my Dads 2000 Dodge Dakota. As soon as I heard it, it sounded like the Tire rubbing on an inner fenderwell. Although it is drivetrain related it is not the Tire.. It squeaks several time per 1 rotation of the tire. This is why I'm thinking 'U' joints. I have had the Rear brakes off, I have snooped around the looking at and pushing, pulling, twisting the Drive shaft. It all looks fine. Can 'U' joints just plain old squeak?
