I Got an M46 For Cheap, Now What? Transmission Coversion Questions.... 200 1984

I was able to pick up an iron-case M46 over the weekend from a gent who blew the head gasket in his '79 245. The cost: the time involved for me to pull the transmission and all the other parts I needed. Sweet deal.
I intend to convert my automatic '84 to the newly acquired M46, but I have a few questions:

1) I was able to drive the car prior to pulling the transmission and was able to go up and down through 1-3. The trans shifted just fine and it did not pop out of any gear. The owner also assured me that fourth was fine and the overdrive worked. I had taken the shift boot off and I noticed ALOT of bearing whine. Clutch in, no whine; clutch out, lots of whine in the three gears and neutral. The whine also increased in volume with an increase in engine/vehicle speed. Is this typical without the shift boot in place? I put a pair of Mechanix gloves over the hole in the body and it did block most of the noise out. The owner also commented on the amout of bearing noise and said it had not gotten any worse in the time he had it. Should I worry about this amount of bearing noise? Should I attempt to replace the bearings? I am hesitant to tear apart an otherwise sound M46 when I don't have access to another one.

2) The transmission is obviously leaking from the selector shaft seal at the top of the case. Is this something I can fix without tearing the entire transmission apart?

Thanks much,
Nick
