Gas gauge funniness. 200 1990

Recently I installed a new in the tank pump along with a new float mechanism. I wanted to renew the whole thing so I put the pump on the float and intake apparatus and installed a whole new float/pump mechanism. It was basically a out with the old and in with the new operation. Everything seems fine, except the gas gauge.
On a road trip today the needle on the gauge was in the red and when I stopped to fill it up the tank only took about 11 gallons?!?
The ’89 245 I had did the same thing.
What’s up with the gas gauge funniness?
