Yesterday in my 1996 960 sedan, while parked in a totally flat parking lot, I could only turn key in ignition to the "Drive" position for a few minutes. It would not turn to "Start." I worked with shift lever, wiggling it around to insure it was fully seated in Park, and finally got it to start. At end of that trip of a few miles, the engine turned off ok, but although the key was apparently turned to the "Locked" position, the key would not pull out until I again wiggled the Shift lever around to insure that it was indeed fully seated in "Park." Since then It has worked ok for a couple of trips. I know these beasts don't heal themselves, so I need suggestions on what to expect. I know from looking at another thread where someone had a shift lockout problem, that there apparently is a microswitch which detects "Park" position. Should I look either for a shift linkage problem or a microswitch problem to rear it's ugly head again? What in the shift linkage actuates or transfers the microswitch? Where is the microswitch located, and how do you get to it to check it if needed? Are there adjustments of the shift linkage that should be checked?
Incidentally, I know that all threads here stand alone and are not related to other threads. How do I report resolution and close threads opened on March 25, 2010, that I finally resolved, but apparently can no longer access or post anything to?
Thanks
