removing seat recliner knob 200

I've seen references to this in terms of "just popping it off" and the like, but vigorous pulling doesn't do it for me. I loosened the piece of plastic casing that sits under the knob in an attempt to inspect the internals, but I don't see any evidence of a circlip or anything. I don't understand how it's attached. What is the recommended method to remove a seat recliner knob without breaking it?
