I understand your pain. I go through this periodically with mine (89/240 manual). Driveability problems like the ones you're having can be caused by 1 thing but more than likely it's a combination of things. I've had excellent success by attacking the general problem of driveability by addressing a number of things simultaneously. If you can, take a day and go through these things in no particular order.
- Remove throttle body, all the hoses and MAF and clean all with appropriate cleaners. (this will likely have a big positive impact but keep going)
- Replace spark plugs and spark plug wires
- Clean the oil trap. Replace all the pcv hoses and flame trap
- Replace air filter
- Change oil and use a fresh filter
- Dump a container of Techron in the tank
- Do an early oil change (1500 miles or so) the Techron can turn your oil dark. I like to flush it out.
Don't forget to order new gasket for the throttle body, o-ring for the oil trap, anti-seize for the plugs, MAF sensor cleaner, throttle body cleaner and plenty of brake cleaner (for the oil trap) before starting this. The oil trap can take quite a while to clean out. I went to the junk yard, pulled one and cleaned it before I got started. So, my process is a swap out. I clean the oil trap I pull and set it on a shelf and do this swap out once a year.
Do all these things and enjoy the difference.
I also ran Seafoam in my intake and can't say it improved anything but it sure didn't hurt. Lots of folks love the stuff and speak highly of it.
