Automatic oil level 700

Just checked the ATF level in my 92 740 wagon. It was way over the high mark on the "hot" scale, and the engine was cold. I'm ashamed to say I have had the car some time and only just checked it. Obviously nothing serious has happened. Can I drain some oil somehow or does it have to be sucked out? And can it do damage or impair the operation ? It all seems to change at the right speeds and conditions.
