oil light 200 1983

OK, I don't know much...
My oil light came on, but it was flickering on at initial acceleration from a stop, and would then turn off but ever so faintly and randomly flicker again. I pulled over right away and put oil in. I put in two quarts and it still flickered the same, so I put in another, and it is still flickering. Then on the test drive it is now creating a smoke bomb out the tail pipe. Had to go to work so when I get back ill check the old level and put more in if needed. I just think it weird the 3qts didn't do anything, isn't the light only to say you are very low on oil? I'm pretty sure these cars only hold about 4qts, right?

Please help, I don't want to lose this car...
