1984 245 turbo York a/c compressor and related questions. 200 1984

I’ve got an 1984 245 Turbo. The other day the a/c stopped working.

I looked under the hood and the fuse holder that I put on the pusher fan I installed had melted. I also have a 30a relay on the fan which was ok.

I replaced the fuse holder and fuse and checked my fuse panel and notice the metal part of the ceramic fuse for the main fuel pump was twisted (bending due to heat?). I replaced that fuse.

Then I tried the a/c and heard a metallic sound so shut it off. Looked at it further and could not turn the clutch by hand but see that the pulley on the York compressor is turning. However once the clutch is energized the pulley is locked.

I had the a/c system converted to R134 about a 1 ½ ago. They used Pac oil in the compressor and changed the seals they however did not change the dryer. The a/c worked ok. Much, much better when I installed the pusher fan later.

Recently before the compressor issue the a/c was getting warmer. I looked into the glass eye on the dryer and saw bubbles.

My alternator was having a hard time keeping up with the load placed on it by the a/c and pusher fan. I thought the alternator was the problem. Now I’m thinking the compressor was pulling to much current.

I'll be the first to admit I should have checked things out much sooner..

I’ve got a really nice PUP close by. I have limited funds but would really like the a/c to function. I plan on purchasing the correct tools to charge/evacuate and check the a/c system so that I can maintain the system properly.

Is purchasing a used compressor at a PUP a feasible idea? If so how would I check it to see if it is in working order at the PUP. I have a multimeter. Do I need to cover the compressor ports when I remove it?

Also is there a way I could upgrade to a newer a/c compressor off of say a 93 240? If so any recommend other a/c parts I should take from a newer 240.

Also any recommendations on a powerful alternator I could get from a PUP would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!
