Safe to Change Tranny Fluid?

I do the flush using the cooling lines on all my Volvos and on one occasion it did introduce a noticeable whine in the transmission of a 940, most likely the torque converter as the pitch is motor speed dependent. The car continues to run perfectly for years but two transmission shops I had look at it did repeat the sleeping transmission legend.
