Safe to Change Tranny Fluid?

I would take your chances and change it.
But that is because I would rather find out if I've got a bummer transmission sooner rather than later.

Changing the fluid probably is a good idea, if you plan to maintain the car.

If you plan to drive it till it quits, leave the transmission fluid alone. I'd change it through the cooling lines. I've done that and I'm glad I did. My transmission is still healthy at 285K.

I agree the clunking is likely worn u-joints.

Good Luck
William
