Driving with Failed Exhaust Manifold Gasket

Son Peter is out in WY with his 940 with a failed exhaust manifold gasket. He could get it fixed locally but we are petrified about somebody breaking a stud, which would be catastrophic. So he will likely drive it back to IA, putt-putting the whole way. Any thoughts on risks to this approach? I told him to take it real easy on acceleration and turbo boost.
