fuel pumps and my ignorance 200 1989

We had the fuel pump replaced a few years ago, but I have heard, occasionaly, there is another "internal pump" perhaps inside the gas tank?? I think I'd rather go ahead and replace it before it should go out due to age (the cars' age, not mine- hehe :oÞ~~ ) and be stuck somewhere. Is it difficult ? The beast is getting along in years and I tend sometimes to take my own advice that says: "If it's not broken, fix it before it does break!" I don't always take my own advice and I have been stuck somewhere at times-not too often thankfully, but I do feel a concern about that pump. Advice? Thanks
