140 Front Caliper Removal 140-160

I intended to repack the front wheel bearings on my 71 142e yesterday. Discovered (had forgotten) that there apparently isn't a way to simply move the front caliper aside to remove the roter. The connection of the brake hose to the backing plate seems to make that impossible. Or is it? Am I missing something here? I really don't want to have to bleed the brakes to do this job....Also, has anyone gotten frustrated with this design and just notched the hole in the backing plate to allow the connection to be loosened and slipped off when the lock nut is slackened?
