Got stranded today - water pump flange jumped 200 1987

Out of nowhere today, cruising on the highway, hear a weird noise and lights go on. Turns out the fan belt together with the clutch and water pump's flange slipped off the water pump shaft. What? The pump is 20K miles old, Volvo OEM.

Got lucky that was near a shop I know, a Meineke in Maspeth, Queens, so they promised to fix by replacing the pump. Before we are leaving on a 1000 mile trip to Maine.

Never thought I'd get stranded like that. Yes, as it should be in the movies, hours before Earl is touching down, on a hot highway, with a pregnant wife. The Volvo been averaging $178/mo with all the upkeep for 26 months. Is there a Honda Fit in my future?
