My 940 wagon started acting funny with the power steering the other day, fortunately I was still in neighborhood. Got her back to my driveway, where she immediately barfs out a big puddle of needed fluid. Hey, it's only my driveway, could have been my garage floor.
Next evening it's quickly apparent that it's the power steering juice. Finally got it up on the stands tonight and it seems like one (or both) of the lines that are part of the rack are leaking near the banjo fittings. Banjo fittings are dr. I can't see crack, but judging by the amount of tubing that is flaking off, not much chance it's not one of these lines. It's clearly not the boots, pump, hi press line, etc. Thought about replacing just those lines, but the rack bosses are pretty rusted up, I guess 17 years is it. Looks like a rebuilt rack will be needed. Read the FAQ and searched around, but got a couple of questions:
1. FAQ says don't rotate steering wheel when rack is disconnected, hard to imaging a little movement won't occur to prevent damaging contact spring for airbag. I'm thinking this means don't rotate the wheel a lot and make sure if it moves a little that I center it up before I re-hook up the rack, correct?
2. Wanted to save or rebuild both hydraulic lines with the banjo fittings, but they are seriously corroded. Not sure the local hydraulic shop could match and bend tube to suit. Anyone got experience with the aftermarket ones that all the 'net guys have? They hold up well or rust out right away. No reason for the Volvo hi press line to cost ~200 bucks, but it does.
Thanks for any input here.
