wiring clusters in 1989 740 GLE 700 1989

So, I am a middle aged woman who loves to tinker. I am rebuilding my 2nd Volvo, simply for removing and replacing parts. Most of it is self explanatory;however, in the latest car, there are many small disconnected wires. How do I find out what they are and whether or not they should be connected? I was told there was not a Bentley manual forthe 740...is there any other publication that would show what the wiring systems are?
