A/C compressor 700 1992

To me it sounds like your compressor is getting ready to sieze, probably from lack of oil. Thats how my '92 compressor went south. Mine would make the belt squeal and eventually threw it off.
Your plan to replace the compressor etc sounds like the best way to go. I replaced mine with one off an 86 (because I had it and I'm cheap) and it still works fine.
