transmission volvo V90 failing

I have a 97 V90 with about 150,000 miles on it. About a month ago, the transmisson failed, it would not drive as if it was in neuteral. I had a used transmission put in, it ran fine for about 200 miles and failed again, the check engine light came on and the up shift arrow started to flash. The shop replaced computer control module for the transmission. Then I picked up again, drove it for about anther 300 miles and then I could smell burning oil, the transmission started to shift irratically and then the up shift light started to flash, this time no check engine light and then the transmission failed again. If I shut the engine off for a few minutes , I could drive the car for about 2 or three miles and then it would die.
