Stretched clutch cable, or synchros shredded? 200

1984 244DL NA/M46

Hey everybody. I've got a new-to-me 84 244.
No qualms about the engine, but the transmission, TABs, brakes, wheel bearings, et al do need attention. It's on the back burner so long as it gets me around until I can put a new engine in my 740.

Anyway.
I put fresh tranny fluid in the car (type F). The old stuff was full of metal flakes. I figure the bearings and synchros are pretty beat up.

I can shift fine between gears, except 1st. Sometimes when stopped, I can't engage first at all. Sometimes letting off the brake helps.
If I'm moving even 5mph and try to engage 1st, it grinds/chunks/thunks into place.
Could it be a clutch cable being too slack, or is it just something I just get to live with until I rebuild the transmission?

Thanks. I'm off to search the FAQ.
Happy bricking
William

**** Come to think of it, it feels like the ford ranger that we had that ended up having a bad slave cylinder. ****
