New 240 owner, AT tranny slips 200 1990

Hi Guys,

On 8/31 I purchased a 1990 240GL AT sedan in Sacramento, CA for only $300. Not sure of the mileage since the odometer stopped working at approx 200K. Except for the tranny slipping and the possibility of a new O2 Sensor (check engine light was on and the codes read 113 and 221), it’s in really good condition. It will eventually need a new windshield and driver seat. Right now, I am focused on the smog and tranny. Smog 1st.

The AC was retrofitted for 134a in 2001 (I think). It does not blow cold.

How to describe this…sometimes, not always, when in drive, 1st gear slips. Sometimes it slightly slips in 2nd. She slips more in 1st gear. The engine kinda lags when in 1st gear as well. When she is in 3rd or 4th, everything is very smooth, no problems what-so-ever. Acceleration is awesome in 3rd and 4th gears.

A really close friend who works on cars described this to her neighbor, who happens to be a tranny expert. He said that it sounds like the 1st gear clutch is worn and it needs a “1st gear clutch pack”, which is $200 where he gets his tranny parts.

Should I just take her to AAMCO and have her checked out? I am really scared I may need a new tranny altogether.

Any thoughts on either the codes or tranny?

I really hope I really did get a good deal.

Thank you for reading my post.
