Ruined 2 new timing belts 700 1988

Hello. My condolences on your Aunt's passing.

What is the oil quality? It's time for some Mobil 1 and not gas station oil. Are you using a quailiy filter or Fram Ultra Cheap?

The belt brand should be Conitech or Volvo! The cheap belts suck!

Yes, the tensioned should be replaced and may be the source of the issue. The AGE of it is very high, which means the grease dried out of it.

The rubber pieces are parts of the Valve Tappet Dampers, and are benign. You could replace them, but it's not super important.

Giatman

EDIT:
Ditto on Volvofromheck's post. Make sure the oil galleys are clear with some wire.
DO NOT FORCE THE BELT TIGHT! The belt is breaking because something is not turning, not because something is not tight enough!
