Antenna wiring 700

My exciting 92 740T wagon lives, so I need to attend to tune-age. I recently bought this car and am not sure of some of its issues, and the PO is out of the country. All the books I have either do not address antenna issues or have diagrams I am not adept at reading.
The antenna was broken off, I replaced the whole unit and it does not work.
I have power to the box next to the motor. At the plug there are 3 wires out to the controller next to the motor. One has power. I believe the other two are ground and signal but not sure.
So, I think the signal wire isn't signaling the controller to do its thing, but can someone enlighten me?
Oh, the radio is not original, it's a Pioneer that seems to have been professionally installed, but no details there, or whether it's correctly wired to the antenna. PO did say it worked before and I believe that to be true.
I did check the antenna switch on the dash, it's set right, I have not checked power to/from it yet.
