More starter problems 444-544

I am still working on getting a 58 444 going. I had an awful grinding noise when the starter cranked the engine. I pulled the starter and saw that the front of the drive gear(about the first quarter of it) was worn down. I managed to find a used starter and replaced that worn bendix assembly with the used good one. I then tried to crank the engine and immediately heard that same noise and stopped cranking. So I guess the question is where do I go from here? The starter is bolted nicely to the flywheel housing, the drive gear is good but it seems not be be engaging fully. I checked the flywheel teeth and couldn't find any broken teeth. Does the starter need some kind of shimming?
